Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Services

TMS therapy, also commonly referred to as Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS), is the latest innovation for treating depression, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and other mental health concerns.
Family Psychological Services offers the latest noninvasive brain stimulation equipment and protocols, so you can achieve relief for a variety of neurological and psychiatric disorders. Unlike antidepressant medication, TMS treatment sessions are entirely drug-free, using magnetic pulses to stimulate nerve cells associated with mood regulation. Read on to learn if you can benefit.

How Does TMS Therapy Work?

Did you know? Many mental health conditions are connected to Brain arrhythmia (irregular brainwave patterns). To address this, a treatment commonly called repetitive TMS (rTMS) uses an electromagnetic coil to send magnetic pulses to the brain. This magnetic field penetrates the skull to stimulate nerve cells in the brain tissue associated with mental health disorders.
Unlike vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) or electroconvulsive therapy, TMS does not require surgery, implanted medical devices, or anesthesia. This makes it a noninvasive form of care for a wide range of symptoms.

Standard Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)

Standard TMS places a Figure-8 coil over your primary motor cortex or other targeted brain regions. The magnetic coil emits TMS pulses that modulate activity, improving mood regulation over time. These treatments are FDA-approved for major depression, OCD, migraines, and smoking cessation.

Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (dTMS)

Deep brain stimulation (dTMS) utilizes a more powerful H-coil to reach over 3x deeper into the brain. Due to this, deep TMS is a great option for patients who have more severe depression or negative symptoms associated with complex psychiatric disorders. Please note that we do not offer dTMS treatments at this time, as they are rather cost-prohibitive.

Treat Depression & Other Mental Health Conditions

TMS is FDA-approved to treat:
  • Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)
  • Treatment-Resistant Depression (TRD)
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
  • Migraines
  • Smoking Cessation
We can also use personalized repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (prTMS®) strategies to alleviate symptoms associated with bipolar disorder, ASD, ADHD, PTSD, and sleep disorders.

Studies Show Promise For Treatment-Resistant Depression Symptoms

When anti-depression medication alone isn’t enough, TMS provides real results backed by clinical trials. Studies have shown that up to 62% of patients undergoing prTMS® maintained improvements for at least 6 months after treatment. Roughly 45% were still symptom-free after a year.

We Offer Advanced
PrTMS® Plans

PrTMS® is a proprietary, patented TMS treatment method that’s fully tailored to each patient. This approach goes beyond standard TMS by mapping your unique brainwaves and neurocognitive patterns. Then, we use that map to adapt the magnetic pulse timing and stimulation intensity to your exact needs.

Am I a Good Candidate For Noninvasive Brain Stimulation?

Most patients tolerate TMS treatment well, as it’s a noninvasive option free from chemicals. However, mild, temporary side effects like scalp discomfort, facial muscle twitching, tingling, or headaches may occur. If you’re not sure whether TMS is right for you, our expert providers will guide you through a thorough evaluation.
Please inform us if you:
  • Are pregnant or planning to be
  • Have a history of seizures, epilepsy, severe headaches, or traumatic brain injury
  • Have implanted metallic or electronic devices (aneurysm clips, cochlear implants, etc.)
  • Are taking prescription medications, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, or supplements

What To Expect From TMS Treatments

1. Personalized Assessments & Brain Mapping

We offer professional psychological testing to help determine if TMS is right for you. For prTMS® treatment plans, we’ll use real-time EEG mapping and neuro-cognitive assessments to identify irregular brainwave patterns. This personalized “brainwave map” allows us to tweak stimulation intensity accordingly.

2. Dedicated TMS Sessions

During each session, magnetic energy is delivered in short bursts using carefully calibrated stimulation parameters. We’ll adjust pulse frequency, motor threshold, and motor cortical excitability in accordance with your brainwave map. You can expect to sit comfortably in the Apollo TMS chair for 20–40 minutes.

3. Ongoing Progress Monitoring

Whether you’re using TMS in combination with other treatments or not, we’ll periodically repeat assessments throughout your treatment. If any changes occur, we’ll adjust your protocol to match.
